What are Binaural Beats (Basic Definition)

Binaural beats is a brain response when presented with two slightly different tonal changes in a stereo situation. When a person is presented with the two different tones - the brain produces a response (binaural beat) that produces an altered state in brainwaves and therefore a hypnotic trance or super learning type environment.

What are Binaural Beats (Detailed Definition)

Binaural beats are auditory brainstem responses which originate in the superior slivery nucleus of each brain hemisphere. They result from two different auditory impulses or sounds, heard from opposite ears. This binaural beat is consciously heard as the human hearing range is from 20-20,000 Hz. Rather it is perceived as an auditory beat and theoretically is being used coach certain brain rhythms from what is called the frequency-following response (the tendency for the brain to resonate at the frequency of an external stimulus).

How It Works On The Brain

This small audio sample, will give the you an idea of the beat produced by the music on the hypnotherapy sessions. 10 SEC's of music by itself is followed by a 1 second silence and the music is repeated with the inclusion of the Binaural generator.

(this sound sample could make you feel sick)

When signals of two different frequencies (sounds) are presented, one to each ear, the brain detects phase differences between these signals. The brain processes this anomalous information differently when these phase differences are heard with stereo headphones or speakers. A perceptual integration of the two signals in perceived in the brain, producing the sensation of a third "beat". The difference between the signals waxes and wanes (this is the "wavy" sound heard in the hypnotic sessions) as the two stereo sounds mesh in and out of phase. The binaural beat is perceived as a fluctuating rhythm at the frequency of the difference between the two auditory inputs.

How It Creates a Hypnotic Response

Binaural beats can easily be heard at the low frequencies (< 30 Hz) that are characteristic of the EEG spectrum (Oster, 1973). This perceptual phenomenon of binaural beating and the objective measurement of the frequency-following response (Hink, Kodera, Yamada, Kaga, & Suzuki, 1980) suggest conditions which generate brain waves activity and altered states of consciousness (hypnotic trance).

There are a growing amount of research efforts reporting changes in consciousness associated with binaural-beats. "The subjective effect of listening to binaural beats may be relaxing or stimulating, depending on the frequency of the binaural-beat stimulation" (Owens & Atwater, 1995). Binaural beats in the delta (1 to 4 Hz) and theta (4 to 8 Hz) ranges have been associated with reports of relaxed, meditative, and creative states (Hiew, 1995), and used as an aid to falling asleep. Binaural beats in the alpha frequencies (8 to 12 Hz) have increased alpha brain waves (Foster, 1990) and binaural beats in the beta frequencies (typically 16 to 24 Hz) have been associated with reports of increased concentration or alertness (Monroe, 1985) and improved memory (Kennerly, 1994).Mind-Fit uses the differing rates of Binaural beat stimulation during the induction and therapy parts of its sessions to aid in the progressive relaxation acquired when entering the Hypnotic state.

Enigma have carried out some basic experiments in caves and long barrows, to show the resonance in the cave, the sad thing is we can not record the sound produced in our brains, it is a truly eerie sound that sort of creeps up on you.

We have used male and female voices to see weather this is a contributing factor that our ancestor's used to conjure up spirits, an interesting spin off from these sounds at the correct volume is that standing waves are produced, We know that tribes today and long ago use chanting in there ritual's, if they used them in a confined space, say a long barrow, dust and mist can and the right light have been proved to form columns, that resemble spirits. Swirl's and lines have also been found on the cave floor in dust after the experiments , these findings have been reproduced in the lab. Is this what our ancestors believe Is spirit's

Standing Wave Formation

The animation below depicts two waves moving through a medium in opposite directions. The blue wave Is moving to the right and the green wave Is moving to the left. As Is the case in any situation in which two waves meet while moving along the same medium, interference will occur. The blue wave and the green wave will interfere to form a new wave pattern known as the resultant. The resultant in the animation below Is shown in black. The resultant Is merely the result of the two individual waves - the blue wave and the green wave - added together in accordance with the principle of superposition.

The result of the interference of the two waves above Is a new wave pattern known as a standing wave pattern. Standing waves are produced whenever two waves of identical frequency interfere with one another while traveling opposite directions along the same medium. Standing wave patterns are characterized by certain fixed points along the medium which undergo no displacement. These points of no displacement are called nodes (nodes can be remembered as points of no displacement); the nodal positions are labeled by an "N" in the animation above. The nodes are always located at the same location along the medium, giving the entire pattern an appearance of standing still (thus the name "standing waves"). A careful inspection of the above animation will reveal that the nodes are the result of the destructive interference of the two interfering waves. At all times and at all nodal points, the blue wave and the green wave interfere to completely destroy each other, thus producing a node.
Midway between every consecutive nodal point are points which undergo maximum displacement. These points are called anti-nodes; the anti-nodal nodal positions are labeled by an "AN" in the animation above. Anti-nodes are points along the medium which oscillate between a large positive displacement and a large negative displacement. A careful inspection of the above animation will reveal that the anti-nodes are the result of the constructive interference of the two interfering waves.
In conclusion, standing wave patterns are produced as the result of the repeated interference of two waves of identical frequency while moving in opposite directions along the same medium. All standing wave patterns consist of nodes and anti-nodes. The nodes are points of no displacement caused by the destructive interference of the two waves. The anti-nodes result from the constructive interference of the two waves and thus undergo maximum displacement from the rest position.
