Infra Red

Night Vision equipment has been around for quite a few years, but the newer night vision equipment is much better than the older gear. In addition to night vision binoculars and monoculars, which help you to see in low-light conditions, night-vision scopes let you reach out and touch someone, even in near total darkness.

NightShot™ - Have you been left in the dark? Well, get right into the light!

Sony's NightShot™ feature makes it possible for you to record images even in total darkness (0 Lux) by bathing the scene with infrared light.
The CCD Chip in the Handycam® Camcorder can see light that our eyes can't, such as infrared.

With NightShot™, the built-in infrared transmitter emits infrared light from 2 LED's on the front panel of the camcorder. This enables you to record from up to ten feet away in total darkness, and with the optional HVL-IRH NightShot™ light1, you can increase your range up to 100 feet!

New for 1999 is NightShot™ with Slow Shutter (on select models). This great new feature improves picture quality in NightShot™ mode for even better looking images shot in total darkness!

HVLIRM Infra-red NightShot light for Handycams with accessory shoe adaptor Useful IR light enhances the NightShot function in dark locations it will increase your range up to 100 feet!

Ok thats the kit out of the way lets look at what infra red realy is.

Different regions in the infrared

IR is often subdivided into

:

* near infrared NIR, IR-A DIN, 0.7–1.4 ?m in wavelength, defined by the water absorption, and commonly used in fiber optic telecomunication because of the low attenuation losses in the SiO2 glass medium.
* short wavelength IR SWIR, IR-B DIN, 1.4–3 ?m Water absorption increases significantly at 1450 nm
* mid wavelength IR MWIR, IR-C DIN, also intermediate-IR (IIR), 3–8 ?m
* long wavelength IR LWIR, IR-C DIN, 8–15 ?m)
* far infrared FIR, 15–1000 ?m

However, these terms are not precise, and are used differently in various studies i.e. near (0.7–5 ?m) / mid (5–30 ?m) / long (30–1000 ?m). Especially at the telecom-wavelengths the spectrum is further subdivided into individual bands, due to limitations of detectors, amplifiers and sources. Infrared radiation is often linked to heat, since objects at room temperature or above will emit radiation mostly concentrated in the mid-infrared band (see black body). The common nomenclature is justified by the different human response to this radiation (near infrared = the red you just cannot see, far IR = thermal radiation), other definitions follow different physical mechanisms (emission peaks, vs. bands, water absorption) e.

This image shows how light is refracted though a prism. Each individual wavelength within the spectrum of visible light wavelengths is representative of a particular color (The separation of visible light into its different colors is known as dispersion).

If you look at the red side of the beam you will notice that the red fades away, this is because the light in this regoin becomes invisable to our eyes. this is the infrared spectrum, most of the night shot camreas work in ths region 700-900 nanometers, one thing to be aware of when using Ir on investigations is that some clothing may appear see though due to some plastics used in the fabric.
